our family life, our way

School Holiday Exploring

on July 4, 2014

The younger kids and I took a drive. There are plenty of places to take a drive here, but this drive took us to the Hunter Valley Zoo. It’s one of the tourist attractions that’s been on our list of things to do ever since we moved here.

For those of you in the Illawarra, I would compare the size of the Hunter Valley Zoo to that of the Shoalhaven Zoo. It’s the kind of place you can quickly scoot through, or you can make a day of it. There is no cafe as such (so no ridiculous meal prices), just a few snacks available in their souvenir shop, and on their website they suggest you load up your esky and made use of their free bbq facilities. We took a picnic.

It was a great day out, not too many people. Parking was a breeze. Plenty of tables and chairs to sit comfortably to eat lunch. Well priced entry charge. Friendly staff. We had no time restraints today, so the only thing we clock watched for was to catch the next feeding of the animals.

Here are some of the bazillions of photos we took. Have you ever seen an albino kangaroo? We saw two today!

I think this is somewhere we will definitely go again. It reminded me of Symbio (another one for you Illawarriors), but it’s not as developed. Or maybe it has simply developed in other ways. It’s somewhere you can go once or twice a year and know you are going to enjoy it. The farmyard petting area was a hit, with us being able to feed the animals, pick the baby ones up and be harrassed/jumped up on by the bigger ones trying to get the food bag out of our hands. The black sheep stole Liam’s. The goats tried their hardest too.

And that was one day of our school holidays.

Are you a fan of zoos?

Karen.
